When people ask, “Why did you choose UA?” I have a difficult time formulating a response. To be honest, I was not one of those people who always dreamed of going here. UA was in my list of options, but I did not have a “dream school”. I participated in an Arizona Experience event the fall of my senior year of high school and that all changed. I absolutely fell in love with the University of Arizona; I loved the campus, the school spirit, and the opportunities it provided.
I started off as a psychology major and had the aspiration of going to medical school. That lasted a semester until I finally admitted to myself that I hated math and was not happy. I took a general educational mythology course the spring semester of my freshman year and discovered my passion. I have always enjoyed mythology and the ancient Greeks and Romans but never thought that was something I could study. I was wrong. UA has an amazing Classics program that I am proud to be a part of. I am learning the history, culture, literature, and language of these ancient peoples. I bet you’re wondering what I am going to do with that after I graduate. The answer is that I am undecided, but there are many options: grad school, teaching, archeology, tour guide for travel companies, museum work, etc.
As important as academics are, there are many more things to consider when choosing a school and a lot of those have to do with involvement around campus: athletics, clubs, internships, and volunteer opportunities (just to name a few). I am a part of the Pride of Arizona marching band and I have done band all three years I have been in school. I am so happy and honored to be a part of an organization that has been around longer than Arizona has been a state! Did you know that the Pride is one of the top ten marching bands in the country?! I love attending the Arizona Athletics events and getting a unique vantage point that comes from being in the band. The friends and bonds that I have made through this organization are unparalleled.
When you are trying to pick a school, think about what is best for YOU. And remember that just because you have plan laid out, it might change and that is perfectly alright. Finally, if you have questions do not be afraid to ask them! I discovered that UA was the right school for me at Arizona Experience and I highly encourage you to attend one of our Arizona Experience events this year to help you make this important decision.
Good luck on all your future endeavors, and hopefully I will see you around campus in the near future.
